Over the past ten years, I’ve spent the majority of my time doing two things; working at the Plank office or travelling. As 75% of our clients are outside of Montreal, I’ve made it a point to visit them regularly in person, which means getting on a plane, or train, quite a bit.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Canada in mid-March, I had to remove these two parts of my day to day life from my schedule. Like millions of other people around the world, I had to shift to a life at home with limited opportunities to interact with others. In my little corner of the world, I didn’t have an office to go to, although our team is doing very well working remotely, and I have no travel at all on the horizon for the foreseeable future.

From top to bottom – Boston, Seattle, Austin and New York City

After taking a couple of weeks to reflect on everything that had changed, I realized that while I may not be able to travel physically right now, I had all the tools at my disposal to travel virtually. While I can’t see someone face-to-face, there is no reason why I still can’t see all the people that I want to see, in a different way. I also figured I could make this whole experience a bit more fun.

I’ve decided to invest the same amount of time each month I would have travelled to individual cities, and visit them virtually. On these virtual travel trips, I will see the people online I would have seen face-to-face. I will immerse myself in each city, and visit online, the galleries I would have gone to, the streets I would have walked, and the places I would have eaten. Knowing some of these cities well, I can easily craft online experiences in the spirit of each town.

From top to bottom – Philadelphia, Cincinnati, San Francisco and Laguna Beach

At the beginning of each month, I will prepare an update on where I visited the previous month, and where I will be going the following month. In the last two weeks of May, I will be doing virtual visits to:

May 21st: Toronto, ON

May 26th: San Francisco, CA

May 28th: Cincinnati, OH

If you live in these cities and would like to meet online, I’d be happy to see you. If you want to book a meeting on one of those days, feel free to send me an email so that we can arrange something.

I hope to see you soon!
